Good, not great, for the Lions: B. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Lions took Kameryn Crawford a full 68 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Alexander at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
KJ Bolden
In pick 32 they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick70
Rnd3
Chris Peal
They paid up for Chris Peal at Round 3, Pick 6 when waiting would have done the job. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick78
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jyaire Hill
Jyaire Hill at the 89th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick91
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain in pick No. 91 is fair value, right on his grade. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick93
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander in slot 93 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick95
Rnd3
Dylan Raiola
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dylan Raiola well ahead of where he belonged. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick96
Rnd3
Devan Thompkins
Devan Thompkins at the 96th overall pick is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford at slot 112 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick114
Rnd4
Jordan Marshall
They talked themselves into Jordan Marshall at No. 114, and the board did not agree. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick150
Rnd5
Ian Moore
Ian Moore in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick171
Rnd5
Nicholas Rodriguez
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nicholas Rodriguez at Round 5, Pick 33. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick197
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. at pick No. 197 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick216
Rnd6
Benjamin Brahmer
Benjamin Brahmer in the 216th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick222
Rnd7
Andrew Rappleyea
A big swing on Andrew Rappleyea at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick225
Rnd7
Jake Guarnera
They paid sticker price for Jake Guarnera in Round 7, Pick 4, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Bryce Thornton
Bryce Thornton slid further than he should have, and pick No. 239 is lovely value for the safety. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick244
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
They reached into another round for Stephiylan Green, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick246
Rnd7
Chris Marshall
Value said wait; Chris Marshall in the 246th overall pick says they were not listening. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
