FutureB
Nobody dealt better than the Lions this weekend: B. The Lions bet big and early on Chris Marshall, 58 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Lions clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
No edge and no loss on Kelley Jones in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick89
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola at the 89th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick91
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain in Round 3, Pick 27 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick93
Rnd3
Dylan Raiola
A real head-scratcher, Dylan Raiola in pick No. 93 is miles ahead of his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94
Rnd3
Jamari Sharpe
Fair-plus on Jamari Sharpe, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick95
Rnd3
Myles Graham
A wild overpay on Myles Graham in No. 95, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick125
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kameryn Crawford this early at pick 125. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick126
Rnd4
Sahir West
Sahir West in the 126th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick129
Rnd4
Ian Moore
Ian Moore at pick No. 129 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick137
Rnd4
Jordan Marshall
They talked themselves into Jordan Marshall at No. 137, and the board did not agree. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick204
Rnd6
Benjamin Brahmer
Benjamin Brahmer in slot 204 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick205
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
Andrew Rappleyea at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick207
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jake Guarnera. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick216
Rnd6
Chris Marshall
This one needs a full-page explanation: Chris Marshall in the 216th overall pick, miles early. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick224
Rnd7
Bryce Thornton
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bryce Thornton. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick239
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
Value said wait; Stephiylan Green in pick 239 says they were not listening. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick240
Rnd7
Tavion Gadson
Tavion Gadson at the 240th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick241
Rnd7
Sammy Omosigho
No drama and no debate, Sammy Omosigho went about where he belonged in slot 241. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick242
Rnd7
Braylan Shelby
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Braylan Shelby well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick245
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
They reached a country mile for D'Antre Robinson at pick No. 245, and the board is aghast. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick246
Rnd7
Mario Landino
A big swing on Mario Landino at the 246th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick247
Rnd7
Sheridan Wilson
They paid up for Sheridan Wilson at Round 7, Pick 26 when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick251
Rnd7
Noah Carter
Noah Carter at the 251st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
