The Lions kept it disciplined and banked a B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Lions took Blake Frazier a full 66 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
However the rest shakes out, Alexander at that price is a win they earned. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick46
Rnd2
Tae Johnson
Tae Johnson at No. 46 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick49
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
By-the-book stuff, Kelley Jones at the 49th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick60
Rnd2
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola at Round 2, Pick 28 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick89
Rnd3
Dylan Raiola
They talked themselves into Dylan Raiola at slot 89, and the board did not agree. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick90
Rnd3
Anto Saka
Anto Saka in the 90th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick91
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander at pick 91 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick94
Rnd3
Luke Reynolds
Value said wait; Luke Reynolds in No. 94 says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick95
Rnd3
Blake Frazier
A real head-scratcher, Blake Frazier in Round 3, Pick 31 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick98
Rnd3
Jordan Marshall
Jordan Marshall at the 98th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick128
Rnd4
AJ Green
A big swing on AJ Green at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
Nicholas Rodriguez
The board had cheaper options than Nicholas Rodriguez at slot 131, and it noticed. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
Jake Guarnera in pick 191 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick202
Rnd6
Noah Carter
Noah Carter at pick No. 202 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick207
Rnd6
Cody Jackson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cody Jackson this early at the 207th pick. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick222
Rnd7
Tavion Gadson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tavion Gadson in the 222nd pick, miles early. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick228
Rnd7
Austin Romaine
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Austin Romaine well ahead of where he belonged. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
