FutureB+
The Lions bled value on every deal, hence the D. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jordan Marshall, 60 picks early at No. 96. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Bolden pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker still on the board.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through linebacker. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Alexander.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
KJ Bolden
They zigged when the board said zag, taking KJ Bolden at safety with linebacker open.
Pick41
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 2, Pick 9 on Kelley Jones with linebacker unsolved.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jyaire Hill
A curious use of the 43rd pick. Linebacker needed the pick; a cornerback in Jyaire Hill did not.
Pick89
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola at the 89th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
Pick90
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jaylen McClain in pick No. 90 leaves linebacker for later.
Pick91
Rnd3
Dylan Raiola
Value said wait; Dylan Raiola in pick 91 says they were not listening. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick92
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went interior defensive lineman with Bear Alexander while clear needs at linebacker sat open.
Pick94
Rnd3
Anto Saka
Anto Saka in pick 94 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick96
Rnd3
Jordan Marshall
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jordan Marshall adds a running back and leaves linebacker untouched.
Pick128
Rnd4
Blake Frazier
They left a pile of value on the table to take Blake Frazier this early at the 128th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick162
Rnd5
Kam Franklin
Kam Franklin at the 162nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
They did well to land Jermaine Mathews Jr. in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick199
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
They jumped the gun on Andrew Rappleyea, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick205
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
Nothing to complain about; Jake Guarnera went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick207
Rnd6
Tavion Gadson
Tavion Gadson in the 207th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick217
Rnd6
Mason Curtis
They robbed the room for Mason Curtis here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick232
Rnd7
Cody Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Cody Jackson at Round 7, Pick 13, value and slot in agreement. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
