FutureB
The Lions did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. Nobody else had Kameryn Crawford anywhere near the 135th overall pick. The Lions did, by 45 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That Lee pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Lions indulged a want in Jones while a need in running back and wide receiver stayed open. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Kelley Jones
They bypassed pressing needs at running back and wide receiver to take Kelley Jones, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick49
Rnd2
Tae Johnson
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Tae Johnson while clear needs at running back and wide receiver sat open.
Pick89
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
They paid sticker price for Samson Okunlola in the 89th pick, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick90
Rnd3
Chris Peal
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Chris Peal at cornerback with running back and wide receiver open.
Pick101
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 101 on Jaylen McClain with running back and wide receiver unsolved.
Pick102
Rnd3
Raylen Wilson
The board had cheaper options than Raylen Wilson at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick127
Rnd4
Sahir West
A want over a need in No. 127: Sahir West adds an interior defensive lineman while running back and wide receiver keeps waiting.
Pick129
Rnd4
Ian Moore
A curious use of slot 129. Running back and wide receiver needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Ian Moore did not.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick205
Rnd6
Dylan Raiola
A reach on Dylan Raiola in pick 205; the board had better options right there. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick218
Rnd6
Kayin Lee
Taking Kayin Lee in Round 6, Pick 38 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick220
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
A conviction pick on Jake Guarnera at the 220th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick222
Rnd7
Andrew Rappleyea
They reached a country mile for Andrew Rappleyea at pick No. 222, and the board is aghast. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick236
Rnd7
Benjamin Brahmer
Benjamin Brahmer at the 236th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick246
Rnd7
Xavier Chaplin
A big swing on Xavier Chaplin at slot 246, well ahead of any board in the building. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick250
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
They left a pile of value on the table to take Stephiylan Green this early at the 250th pick. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
