The board had answers; the Lions had Williams. Grade: F. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Lions shredded theirs for Amaris Williams. He came off 63 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Fitzgerald value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Azeez Al-Shaair deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
They went 3 of 3 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
KJ Bolden
In No. 25 they get a centerfielder for the defense, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick41
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
A reach on Kelley Jones in pick No. 41; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick89
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
A straight-up fair deal on Samson Okunlola at the 89th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain at pick 100 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick108
Rnd4
Dylan Raiola
A big swing on Dylan Raiola at Round 4, Pick 7, well ahead of any board in the building. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick126
Rnd4
Myles Graham
Myles Graham in the 126th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick156
Rnd5
Jordan Marshall
A premium they did not need to pay, Jordan Marshall a notch or two before his time. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick163
Rnd5
Blake Frazier
The board had cheaper options than Blake Frazier at the 163rd pick, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick175
Rnd5
Amaris Williams
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Amaris Williams well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick180
Rnd6
Robert Fitzgerald
Circle this one: Robert Fitzgerald at No. 180 is a fall that decides a draft. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick200
Rnd6
Benjamin Brahmer
Benjamin Brahmer at the 200th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick204
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
They left a pile of value on the table to take Andrew Rappleyea this early at pick 204. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick216
Rnd6
Bryce Thornton
Bryce Thornton at pick No. 216 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick217
Rnd6
Jeremiah Cobb
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Cobb at the 217th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jake Guarnera
No edge and no loss on Jake Guarnera in slot 224; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
Stephiylan Green at the 237th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick239
Rnd7
Sheridan Wilson
Sheridan Wilson at Round 7, Pick 18 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick246
Rnd7
Tavion Gadson
They reached into another round for Tavion Gadson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick247
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
D'Antre Robinson in No. 247 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Pick257
Rnd7
Cody Jackson
A conviction pick on Cody Jackson at the Round 7 slot that the board grades a round light. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
