Draft Grade — Lions
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedC
TradesA+
FutureC+
The Lions worked the phones like thieves and earned a B-. The Lions treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 222nd overall pick on D'Antre Robinson a full 81 spots early. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Landing Bolden that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Spending an early pick on cornerback with running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Kelley Jones
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kelley Jones at cornerback with running back open.
Pick49
Rnd2
KJ Bolden
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. KJ Bolden in the 49th pick leaves running back for later.
Pick89
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
They paid sticker price for Samson Okunlola in slot 89, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick90
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Bear Alexander adds an interior defensive lineman and leaves running back untouched.
Pick101
Rnd3
Jaylen McClain
A surprising call. With running back still to address, they spent pick 101 on Jaylen McClain, a safety they were not short of.
Pick102
Rnd3
Xavier Atkins
They bypassed pressing needs at running back to take Xavier Atkins, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick127
Rnd4
Luke Montgomery
They let Luke Montgomery come to them and pounced at No. 127. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick132
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
A big swing on Kameryn Crawford at pick 132, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick135
Rnd4
Ian Moore
Ian Moore at the 135th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick162
Rnd5
Nicholas Rodriguez
A clean, defensible pick in the 162nd pick with a little surplus value in Nicholas Rodriguez. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick181
Rnd6
Dylan Raiola
Dylan Raiola at Round 6, Pick 1 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick197
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
A cornerback of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick205
Rnd6
Francis Brewu
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Francis Brewu well ahead of where he belonged. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Pick206
Rnd6
Stephiylan Green
A real head-scratcher, Stephiylan Green in pick No. 206 is miles ahead of his ranking. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick208
Rnd6
Andrew Rappleyea
Andrew Rappleyea in the 208th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
They paid a round early for Jake Guarnera in the 216th overall pick, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick222
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
They left a pile of value on the table to take D'Antre Robinson this early at the Round 7 slot. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick247
Rnd7
Cody Jackson
Cody Jackson at slot 247 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
