Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B-
ValueC NeedC TradesA+ FutureC+
The Lions turned the phones into found money: B-.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Lions took D'Antre Robinson at slot 234, roughly 69 spots before his name belonged. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Getting Mathews Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Spending an early pick on cornerback with running back and wide receiver open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Kelley Jones
They bypassed pressing needs at running back and wide receiver to take Kelley Jones, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick57 Rnd2 Dashawn Spears
A surprising call. With running back and wide receiver still to address, they spent the 57th overall pick on Dashawn Spears, a safety they were not short of.
Pick89 Rnd3 Bear Alexander
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Running back and wide receiver needed the pick; an interior defensive lineman in Bear Alexander did not.
Pick90 Rnd3 Samson Okunlola
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Samson Okunlola. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick101 Rnd3 Jaylen McClain
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jaylen McClain in Round 3, Pick 37 leaves running back and wide receiver for later.
Pick102 Rnd3 Sahir West
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went interior defensive lineman with Sahir West while clear needs at running back and wide receiver sat open.
Pick127 Rnd4 Kameryn Crawford
A wild overpay on Kameryn Crawford in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick175 Rnd5 Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier in Round 5, Pick 38 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick178 Rnd5 Dylan Raiola
A real head-scratcher, Dylan Raiola in No. 178 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick205 Rnd6 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. in slot 205 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick206 Rnd6 Benjamin Brahmer
Benjamin Brahmer in the 206th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick207 Rnd6 Andrew Rappleyea
Andrew Rappleyea at pick 207 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick208 Rnd6 Jake Guarnera
Jake Guarnera at the 208th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
Pick216 Rnd6 Kayin Lee
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 216 is the definition of value, full stop. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick217 Rnd6 Payton Pierce
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Pierce at No. 217, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick223 Rnd7 Stephiylan Green
Value said wait; Stephiylan Green in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Pick234 Rnd7 D'Antre Robinson
This one needs a full-page explanation: D'Antre Robinson in slot 234, miles early. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
