FutureB
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Lions and Echoles: B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Lions were there to profit. Will Echoles, the No. 14 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 70. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The cost of the Green reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
The Lions paired the rookies with proven help, Christian Gonzalez leading the way. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick50
Rnd2
Dashawn Spears
Dashawn Spears in Round 2, Pick 18 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Pick56
Rnd2
Samson Okunlola
This one needs a full-page explanation: Samson Okunlola in the 56th overall pick, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick70
Rnd3
Will Echoles
They barely believed it either: Will Echoles still on the board at pick No. 70. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick98
Rnd3
Dylan Raiola
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dylan Raiola this early at the 98th pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick115
Rnd4
Jordan Marshall
Value said wait; Jordan Marshall in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick118
Rnd4
Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier at No. 118 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick124
Rnd4
Luke Reynolds
They talked themselves into Luke Reynolds at pick 124, and the board did not agree. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick137
Rnd4
AJ Green
A wild overpay on AJ Green in slot 137, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick151
Rnd5
Nicholas Rodriguez
A reasonable price with a little left over, Nicholas Rodriguez in Round 5, Pick 13. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick155
Rnd5
Cayden Lee
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cayden Lee. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick203
Rnd6
Smith Snowden
Smith Snowden at the 203rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick222
Rnd7
TJ Metcalf
TJ Metcalf at pick 222 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
