Draft Grade — Lions
Overall C+
ValueC NeedC TradesB- FutureB-
The Lions landed square in the muddy middle: C+.

The Lions looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jaleel Johnson at the Round 6 slot regardless, 68 picks early.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Lions indulged a want in Jones while a need in quarterback, running back and other spots stayed open.

Hit on Kelley Jones and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Kelley Jones
A surprising call. With quarterback, running back and other spots still to address, they spent Round 1, Pick 25 on Kelley Jones, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick57 Rnd2 Jelani McDonald
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 57 on Jelani McDonald with quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved.
Pick89 Rnd3 Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola in the 89th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick127 Rnd4 Sahir West
Of all the spots to shop, they chose interior defensive lineman. Sahir West in the 127th overall pick leaves quarterback, running back and other spots for later.
Pick162 Rnd5 Nicholas Rodriguez
A tidy little value on Nicholas Rodriguez in No. 162, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick205 Rnd6 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jermaine Mathews Jr. in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick216 Rnd6 Jaleel Johnson
Jaleel Johnson in No. 216 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick246 Rnd7 Bryce Thornton
Bryce Thornton at the 246th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick254 Rnd7 Xavier Chaplin
Xavier Chaplin in slot 254 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
