A respectable, level-headed haul for the Lions: B-. Nobody else had Easton Dean anywhere near the 250th overall pick. The Lions did, by 141 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. The James pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In pick 29 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value.
Pick61
Rnd2
Adisa Isaac
They paid sticker price for Adisa Isaac in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick73
Rnd3
D.J. James
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 73, where D.J. James graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick166
Rnd5
LaDarius Henderson
LaDarius Henderson in Round 5, Pick 30 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick207
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
They paid a round early for Tanor Bortolini in the 207th pick, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick250
Rnd7
Easton Dean
Easton Dean at the 250th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
