Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Steelers let McCaffrey fall and pounced. Final grade: B+. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. Luke McCaffrey, the No. 149 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 197. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Greenfield reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
Value with a capital V on Laiatu Latu in the Round 1 slot, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick74
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
A clean, defensible pick in the 74th overall pick with a little surplus value in Ruke Orhorhoro. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick84
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
A slide stopped in pick 84, with Patrick Paul worth more than the price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick98
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson at slot 98 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick105
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cole Bishop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in No. 119 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick125
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Elijah Jones at pick No. 125. It fills a real need, too.
Pick143
Rnd5
Johnny Wilson
They will replay Johnny Wilson at Round 5, Pick 7 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick178
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at the 178th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick195
Rnd6
Garret Greenfield
Garret Greenfield in pick No. 195 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick197
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at slot 197 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
