Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB
The Chargers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Chargers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Chargers indulged a want in Smith while a need in edge rusher and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In the 5th pick they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu is a better player than pick No. 37 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick69
Rnd3
Caelen Carson
Caelen Carson in the 69th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick93
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A surprising call. With edge rusher and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent the Round 3 slot on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick97
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith at Round 3, Pick 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick109
Rnd4
Max Melton
Max Melton at slot 109 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
Nothing to complain about; MarShawn Lloyd went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick142
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in pick 142 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick172
Rnd5
Curtis Jacobs
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Curtis Jacobs. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick183
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 6 slot with a little surplus value in Michael Barrett. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick226
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa at No. 226 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
