Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

FutureA
Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a B+ for the Patriots. Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
However the rest shakes out, Jones at that price is a win they earned. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Suamataia pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy at the Round 1 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick34
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
They talked themselves into Kingsley Suamataia at the 34th pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick46
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
A real head-scratcher, Patrick Paul in pick 46 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick68
Rnd3
Xavier Legette
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in slot 68; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick78
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 14 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick104
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at No. 104 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
They paid sticker price for Cedric Gray in the 119th overall pick, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick125
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at pick No. 125, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick136
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Johnny Wilson at No. 136. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182
Rnd6
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at Round 6, Pick 7 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215
Rnd6
Myles Harden
Myles Harden in pick No. 215 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick229
Rnd7
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones in the 229th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
