The Broncos found their guy under center in McCarthy: D. The tape said wait; the Broncos did not. AJ Barner went at the 136th pick, a good 36 picks before the board was ready.
J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick 26 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick57
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
A premium they did not need to pay, Xavier Legette a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick70
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
A clean, defensible pick in No. 70 with a little surplus value in Patrick Paul. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick76
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
A conviction pick on Bucky Irving at pick No. 76 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
Pick121
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in the Round 4 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick136
Rnd4
AJ Barner
AJ Barner at slot 136 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick145
Rnd5
Jaylin Simpson
Jaylin Simpson is a better player than the 145th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick147
Rnd5
Brennan Jackson
Brennan Jackson at pick 147 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick207
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
A reach for Gabe Hall in pick No. 207; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
