NEP24 DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots

FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Patriots. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Fernando Carmona a full 27 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Lane. On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Nothing gained and nothing lost at the table.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In the 30th pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. Need was not the driver here.
Pick62
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
Nice patience on Ja'Kobi Lane, who had no business lasting to slot 62. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zakee Wheatley at the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick124
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
No edge and no loss on Charles Jagusah in pick 124; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick130
Rnd4
DJ McKinney
A straight-up fair deal on DJ McKinney at No. 130, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick170
Rnd5
Monroe Mills
They went early on Monroe Mills in Round 5, Pick 30, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick180
Rnd5
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. in Round 5, Pick 40 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick199
Rnd6
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at pick 199 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick245
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
This one needs a full-page explanation: Fernando Carmona in pick No. 245, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
