Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+

FutureB
The Bears cashed the board's mistake on Grant: B+. The Bears ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
Landing Grant that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The Giddens pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Spending an early pick on tight end with edge rusher and quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In pick No. 20 they get protection for the quarterback, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick39
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at the 39th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick42
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
A tight end of that caliber at the 42nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick49
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Nice patience on Jihaad Campbell, who had no business lasting to slot 49. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick51
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant at pick 51 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick72
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
They talked themselves into Kevin Winston Jr. at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick110
Rnd4
Terrance Ferguson
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Terrance Ferguson adds a tight end and leaves edge rusher and quarterback untouched.
Pick122
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
The board fumbled Darius Alexander all the way to the 122nd pick, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick148
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
A wild overpay on DJ Giddens in pick No. 148, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick197
Rnd6
CJ West
Value with a capital V on CJ West in the Round 6 slot, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick208
Rnd6
Kyle Monangai
The board had cheaper options than Kyle Monangai at Round 6, Pick 32, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick233
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
No edge and no loss on Isaac TeSlaa in No. 233; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick240
Rnd7
Robert Longerbeam
A quiet steal in pick 240: Robert Longerbeam for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
