Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall

FutureB-
Johnson should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a B. Thirty-one other rooms let Cornelius Johnson slide, and the Steelers were the ones holding the card at Round 7, Pick 23. Highway robbery.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Mertz pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Frazier pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots still on the board.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In pick No. 22 they get a blindside protector. Need was not the driver here.
Pick34
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on JT Tuimoloau. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick54
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell at Round 2, Pick 22 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick80
Rnd3
Zach Frazier
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Zach Frazier while clear needs at interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots sat open.
Pick116
Rnd4
Beau Brade
A straight-up fair deal on Beau Brade at the 116th pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick121
Rnd4
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant at the 121st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick194
Rnd6
Graham Mertz
They jumped the gun on Graham Mertz, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick237
Rnd7
Steve Linton
Circle this one: Steve Linton at No. 237 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick243
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
They will replay Cornelius Johnson at slot 243 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
