Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall

FutureA
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Commanders to a C+. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Commanders, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
They will need Williams to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Allen. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the 17th pick they get a bendy edge with upside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
Graham Barton
A reach on Graham Barton in pick No. 40; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick48
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick50
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
They read the board right and J.J. McCarthy was the payoff at No. 50. The roster fit checks out.
Pick53
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Chop Robinson in slot 53, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick67
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at the 67th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick96
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at pick 96 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick97
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A tidy little value on Zak Zinter in Round 3, Pick 34, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick101
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
They paid a round early for Leonard Taylor III in pick 101, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111
Rnd4
James Williams
A wild overpay on James Williams in slot 111, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick181
Rnd6
Braelon Allen
The board fumbled Braelon Allen all the way to the 181st pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220
Rnd6
Jordan Magee
A clean, defensible pick in No. 220 with a little surplus value in Jordan Magee. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
