Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB
The Cowboys let Dart fall into their laps, and walked away with a D. Somebody in No. 188 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Jaxson Dart, the No. 120 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The Thornton Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Luther Burden III
In the 13th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
No edge and no loss on Jonah Savaiinaea in the 44th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick55
Rnd2
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte in pick No. 55 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick65
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Emery Jones Jr. at pick 65 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick77
Rnd3
Ollie Gordon II
They took Ollie Gordon II at par in Round 3, Pick 13, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Karene Reid
Karene Reid at No. 113 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick122
Rnd4
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders at slot 122 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick151
Rnd5
LT Overton
LT Overton at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick169
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A big swing on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick 169, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick170
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
They went early on Davison Igbinosun in the 170th pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick172
Rnd5
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at the Round 5 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jaxson Dart
Jaxson Dart at the 188th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick209
Rnd6
Dasan McCullough
A reach for Dasan McCullough in slot 209; a little patience would have been rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
