FutureA+
A passer of the future in Maye, and a B+, for the Commanders. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
However the rest shakes out, Tampa at that price is a win they earned. Every board in the league had Johnson lower, and that gap is the story. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In No. 8 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
They read the board right and Kool-Aid McKinstry was the payoff at the 36th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick40
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
They took Xavier Legette at par in the 40th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick49
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan slid further than he should have, and pick No. 49 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
Good price on Kingsley Suamataia in pick 67, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick74
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at slot 74 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick78
Rnd3
T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick96
Rnd3
Jaylen Wright
They will replay Jaylen Wright at Round 3, Pick 33 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick100
Rnd3
Theo Johnson
They reached a country mile for Theo Johnson at the 100th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick139
Rnd5
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten in No. 139 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick149
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in pick 149 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
