Draft Grade — Texans

The Texans let Hampton fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Omarion Hampton at slot 58 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
In the Round 1 slot they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick58 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
The board fumbled Omarion Hampton all the way to the 58th overall pick, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick79 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 15: Tate Ratledge for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick89 Rnd3 Tez Johnson
They liked Tez Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 89. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick166 Rnd5 Logan Brown
They will replay Logan Brown at No. 166 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick236 Rnd7 Carson Vinson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Carson Vinson in slot 236. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick241 Rnd7 Sam Brown Jr.
A reach for Sam Brown Jr. in pick 241; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
