kipopadoo DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B. The 49ers put a flag in the ground for Hayden Conner, 43 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Landing Arroyo that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In slot 11 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
T.J. Sanders
Fair-plus on T.J. Sanders, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
No drama and no debate, Chris Paul Jr. went about where he belonged in No. 75. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick100
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
Circle this one: Elijah Arroyo at pick 100 is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
A quiet steal in the 113th pick: Jared Wilson for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jaylin Lane
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jaylin Lane in the Round 4 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick147
Rnd5
O'Donnell Fortune
They jumped the gun on O'Donnell Fortune, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick160
Rnd5
Brashard Smith
Taking Brashard Smith in the 160th pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick227
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
A real head-scratcher, Hayden Conner in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249
Rnd7
Shemar James
Shemar James at the 249th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick252
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
LaJohntay Wester at pick 252 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
