Papagaff DRAFTING FOR THEBengals
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Bengals kept it disciplined and banked a B-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bengals would have aced it. JJ Pegues at No. 153 is 23 spots clear of where he belonged.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Gadsden II pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with tight end chief among the fixes. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 17th pick they get a ballhawk on the back end. More want than need.
Pick49
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in No. 49 is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick81
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Jackson. It fills a real need, too.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cody Simon
They liked Cody Simon enough to skip the value, taking him in the 119th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick153
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They left a pile of value on the table to take JJ Pegues this early at slot 153. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick193
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
Value with a capital V on Oronde Gadsden II in Round 6, Pick 17, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
