Draft Grade — Lions
Overall
D-
ValueB-

TradesF
FutureC
The Lions found their guy under center in Maye: D-. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Lions shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
They are betting Byrd proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They punted on offensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They banked enough surplus on Torrence to cover a lot of smaller sins. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick29
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In the 29th overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick61
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
A reasonable price with a little left over, Xavier Worthy in slot 61. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick73
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
Brandon Dorlus in pick No. 73 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick167
Rnd5
Braiden McGregor
By-the-book stuff, Braiden McGregor at Round 5, Pick 31 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick201
Rnd6
Ro Torrence
Somehow Ro Torrence was still sitting there in the 201st pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick232
Rnd7
Solomon Byrd
Solomon Byrd at No. 232 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick249
Rnd7
Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor in pick 249 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
