Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
D+
ValueB

TradesF
FutureA+
The Commanders let Howard fall and pounced. Final grade: D+. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Every board in the league had Conner lower, and that gap is the story. Howard at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The veteran additions, JC Latham chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In the 25th pick they get a mismatch in the passing game, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick55
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Steal is underselling it; Jihaad Campbell at slot 55 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick59
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kaleb Johnson in No. 59. It fills a real need, too.
Pick61
Rnd2
Josaiah Stewart
Josaiah Stewart in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Pick68
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Value with a capital V on Demetrius Knight Jr. in the 68th overall pick, a genuine coup. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick79
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
They barely believed it either: Jaylin Noel still on the board at pick No. 79. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba slid further than he should have, and slot 94 is lovely value for the safety. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick103
Rnd4
Tai Felton
Tai Felton at the 103rd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at pick 109 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick121
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom at pick No. 121 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick128
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
A straight-up fair deal on Cobee Bryant at the 128th pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick129
Rnd4
Will Howard
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Will Howard in Round 4, Pick 27, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick132
Rnd4
Ty Hamilton
No edge and no loss on Ty Hamilton in No. 132; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick141
Rnd5
Dillon Gabriel
They let Dillon Gabriel come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick167
Rnd5
O'Donnell Fortune
A slide stopped in the 167th pick, with O'Donnell Fortune worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick176
Rnd5
Jack Kiser
A reach on Jack Kiser in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick178
Rnd6
CJ West
The board had cheaper options than CJ West at slot 178, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick179
Rnd6
Jarquez Hunter
Jarquez Hunter in pick No. 179 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick188
Rnd6
Que Robinson
By-the-book stuff, Que Robinson at Round 6, Pick 12 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick205
Rnd6
Clay Webb
A tidy little value on Clay Webb in pick 205, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick216
Rnd6
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at No. 216 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick245
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Hayden Conner. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
They paid a round early for Jaylin Smith in No. 255, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
