Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-

The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Allen: B-.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. CJ Allen, the No. 32 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 95th overall pick.

That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Sturdivant pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 R Mason Thomas
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63 Rnd2 Antonio Williams
They let Antonio Williams come to them and pounced at pick 63. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick95 Rnd3 CJ Allen
CJ Allen at slot 95 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick125 Rnd4 Jude Bowry
Good price on Jude Bowry in No. 125, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Pick131 Rnd4 Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg in the 131st pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick169 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
By-the-book stuff, DJ Campbell at Round 5, Pick 31 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick189 Rnd6 Le'Veon Moss
A reasonable price with a little left over, Le'Veon Moss in pick No. 189. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick200 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
A reach on Trey Zuhn III in the 200th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick207 Rnd6 Robert Spears-Jennings
They went early on Robert Spears-Jennings in Round 6, Pick 28, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick210 Rnd6 J. Michael Sturdivant
They jumped the gun on J. Michael Sturdivant, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247 Rnd7 Ja'Keem Jackson
Ja'Keem Jackson at No. 247 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
