FutureB
The Cowboys let Hardy fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. When a board-topper like Daequan Hardy slides to the Round 6 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Ulofoshio pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Adding Chris Slayton by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
Good price on Amarius Mims in No. 28, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick56
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
No drama and no debate, Xavier Worthy went about where he belonged in slot 56. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick92
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
No edge and no loss on Christian Mahogany in Round 3, Pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick173
Rnd5
Walter Rouse
By-the-book stuff, Walter Rouse at pick No. 173 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick213
Rnd6
Daequan Hardy
Daequan Hardy at pick 213 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick216
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand in the 216th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick231
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
A clean, defensible pick in the 231st pick with a little surplus value in Frank Gore Jr.. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick242
Rnd7
Edefuan Ulofoshio
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the 242nd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick246
Rnd7
Tyler Owens
Tyler Owens in pick No. 246 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
