There is reaching, and then there is McKade Mettauer at pick No. 233. The Cowboys jumped the board by 37 and dared it to prove them wrong.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.

Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Getting Fisher where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

So much rides on Xavier Legette that the real verdict is a season or two away.
