FutureB
The Cowboys kept it disciplined and banked a B. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Steven Parker in No. 249.
That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In the 12th pick they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick58
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at the 76th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick127
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Taking Kevin Winston Jr. in slot 127 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick150
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
You do not let an offensive lineman like Hollin Pierce reach No. 150 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick167
Rnd5
Cody Simon
They barely believed it either: Cody Simon still on the board at Round 5, Pick 28. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
A straight-up fair deal on Cobee Bryant at slot 170, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Hayden Conner
A real head-scratcher, Hayden Conner in the 172nd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick174
Rnd5
Alijah Huzzie
Alijah Huzzie at pick 174 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick190
Rnd6
Dillon Gabriel
They will replay Dillon Gabriel at the 190th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211
Rnd6
Brant Kuithe
They paid up for Brant Kuithe at the Round 6 slot when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Steven Parker
A wild overpay on Steven Parker in Round 7, Pick 31, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
