Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
Williams is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a D-.

The Bears lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.

They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

The cost of the Nugent reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That McClellan pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In pick 1 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In slot 9 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
Pick74 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at No. 74 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75 Rnd3 Josh Newton
The board had Josh Newton higher than the 75th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick110 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Good price on Khyree Jackson in pick No. 110, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick127 Rnd4 Drake Nugent
A reach for Drake Nugent in the 127th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick146 Rnd5 Austin Booker
The board had cheaper options than Austin Booker at Round 5, Pick 10, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick186 Rnd6 Roger Rosengarten
A slide stopped in pick No. 186, with Roger Rosengarten worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jase McClellan
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jase McClellan in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
