Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Bears, and a B to prove it.

It is the swing that defines the weekend: Dayon Hayes in the Round 7 slot, a good 82 spots before the room expected him. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

That Emmanwori pick is the receipt they will wave around later. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 James Pearce Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on James Pearce Jr. at the 10th pick, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick41 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
Somehow Nick Emmanwori was still sitting there in slot 41, and they pounced on premier safety value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick44 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Omarion Hampton at the 44th overall pick is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick72 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
They reached a country mile for Jared Wilson at No. 72, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Pick95 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick148 Rnd5 Mitchell Evans
They took Mitchell Evans at par in Round 5, Pick 10, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick226 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
Shilo Sanders at pick 226 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick233 Rnd7 Dayon Hayes
A real head-scratcher, Dayon Hayes in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick240 Rnd7 Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They paid sticker price for Jamon Dumas-Johnson in pick No. 240, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
