The Bears ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.

With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Smith value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

The Bears clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

It is a haul that will look even better come September.
