The phones sank the Bears this weekend: B-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bears did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Zinter has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a seam-stretching tight end. Need was not the driver here.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In No. 9 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in the 43rd overall pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick48
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
A wild overpay on Patrick Paul in slot 48, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick74
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
They took Michael Hall Jr. at par in pick 74, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick75
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A real head-scratcher, Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick109
Rnd4
Renardo Green
Renardo Green in pick No. 109 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
