Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
The Bears did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

The Bears went off the board in a big way for Patrick Payton, 47 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Landing Campbell that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In No. 25 they get a three-down second-level presence. A real need, handled.
Pick63 Rnd2 Lee Hunter
Nothing to complain about; Lee Hunter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick89 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick126 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
They read the board right and Tacario Davis was the payoff at slot 126. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick131 Rnd4 Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. in the 131st pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick163 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
They reached a country mile for Patrick Payton at the 163rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick189 Rnd6 DJ Campbell
Somehow DJ Campbell was still sitting there in pick No. 189, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick200 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III in No. 200 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick239 Rnd7 Will Kacmarek
They went early on Will Kacmarek in pick 239, and the value did not follow. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick241 Rnd7 PJ Williams
They did well to land PJ Williams in slot 241, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick247 Rnd7 Kendrick Law
The board had cheaper options than Kendrick Law at Round 7, Pick 31, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
