Some hits, some head-scratchers, and a C+ for the Colts. The rest of the league had time to spare on Tony Rojas; the Colts did not wait, grabbing him 136 spots ahead at Round 7, Pick 4. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.
The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Ponds pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick47
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They read the board right and Sonny Styles was the payoff at pick No. 47. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick78
Rnd3
Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette at the 78th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick113
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on D'Angelo Ponds with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick162
Rnd5
Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander at the 162nd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick216
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen at pick 216 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick220
Rnd7
Tony Rojas
They reached a country mile for Tony Rojas at slot 220, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick230
Rnd7
Xavian Sorey Jr.
They talked themselves into Xavian Sorey Jr. at Round 7, Pick 14, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick253
Rnd7
Da'Shawn Womack
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Da'Shawn Womack. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
