Draft Grade — Colts
Overall C+
ValueC- NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The jury is out on the Colts. For now, C+.

Nobody else had Luke Lachey anywhere near slot 142. The Colts did, by 92 spots, and that gap is the whole story.

The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Alexander is a bad player; it is that the Colts had louder needs to answer first. On value alone, Mahlman makes the weekend a net positive.

Hit on Princely Umanmielen and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Princely Umanmielen
They paid sticker price for Princely Umanmielen in slot 14, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick49 Rnd2 Tacario Davis
They reached a country mile for Tacario Davis at pick 49, and the board is aghast. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick97 Rnd3 Zy Alexander
A want over a need in pick No. 97: Zy Alexander adds a cornerback while wide receiver, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick116 Rnd4 Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick142 Rnd5 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in No. 142 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick152 Rnd5 Jake Slaughter
A wild overpay on Jake Slaughter in Round 5, Pick 14, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick161 Rnd5 Miles Frazier
They left a pile of value on the table to take Miles Frazier this early at the Round 5 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Pick193 Rnd6 Rod Moore
Rod Moore at slot 193 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick232 Rnd7 Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa in the 232nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick243 Rnd7 Phillip Webb
Phillip Webb at the 243rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
