Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureA+
The Patriots let Hampton fall into their laps, and walked away with a A.

Call it larceny. Omarion Hampton sat on the board until the 69th pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. Little to argue with here, and the A says so.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.

Pick Analysis
Pick26 Rnd1 Nick Emmanwori
In pick 26 they get a two-high chess piece at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38 Rnd2 Jack Sawyer
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jack Sawyer in No. 38. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick69 Rnd3 Omarion Hampton
They barely believed it either: Omarion Hampton still on the board at the Round 3 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
A straight-up fair deal on Ozzy Trapilo at pick No. 77, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick89 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant in Round 3, Pick 25 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106 Rnd4 Tez Johnson
Good price on Tez Johnson in the 106th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick144 Rnd5 Tyler Baron
Tyler Baron in slot 144 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick190 Rnd6 Quincy Riley
Quincy Riley at the 190th overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick217 Rnd7 Oronde Gadsden II
You do not let a tight end like Oronde Gadsden II reach pick No. 217 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jay Higgins
They will replay Jay Higgins at slot 220 for years; that is how good the value is. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick238 Rnd7 Bilhal Kone
A clean, defensible pick in the 238th overall pick with a little surplus value in Bilhal Kone. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
