Draft Grade — Raiders
Overall F
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureC
A weekend the Raiders spent ahead of the board, for worse: F.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Raiders took Clayton Smith at Round 7, Pick 41, roughly 151 spots before his name belonged. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will answer for taking linebacker early while tight end went begging.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. On value alone, Styles makes the weekend a net positive.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Jordyn Tyson
In slot 18 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick23 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In pick No. 23 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick35 Rnd2 Kayden McDonald
Nothing to complain about; Kayden McDonald went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick38 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
They paid up for Olaivavega Ioane at Round 2, Pick 6 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49 Rnd2 Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard at pick 49 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick66 Rnd3 Sonny Styles
A curious use of the 66th overall pick. Tight end needed the pick; a linebacker in Sonny Styles did not.
Pick68 Rnd3 A'Mauri Washington
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on A'Mauri Washington. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick93 Rnd3 Sam Leavitt
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sam Leavitt at pick 93 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick104 Rnd4 Zachariah Branch
The board had cheaper options than Zachariah Branch at pick No. 104, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick108 Rnd4 Adon Shuler
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 8 with a little surplus value in Adon Shuler. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick111 Rnd4 Chase Bisontis
Chase Bisontis at No. 111 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick117 Rnd4 Logan Jones
This one needs a full-page explanation: Logan Jones in slot 117, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick134 Rnd4 DJ Campbell
They reached into another round for DJ Campbell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick173 Rnd5 Aaron Anderson
Aaron Anderson in the 173rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick177 Rnd5 Jaydn Ott
Jaydn Ott at the 177th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick181 Rnd6 Zane Durant
They took Zane Durant at par in Round 6, Pick 2, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick185 Rnd6 Taylen Green
They paid sticker price for Taylen Green in pick 185, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick198 Rnd6 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jermaine Mathews Jr. at slot 198. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick201 Rnd6 Nolan Rucci
A wild overpay on Nolan Rucci in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick211 Rnd6 Cam Calhoun
Cam Calhoun at No. 211 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216 Rnd7 Trey Zuhn III
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trey Zuhn III well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick219 Rnd7 James Williams Sr.
James Williams Sr. at the 219th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick236 Rnd7 Malik Hartford
Malik Hartford at pick 236 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick254 Rnd7 Conner Weigman
Conner Weigman at the 254th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick256 Rnd7 Clayton Smith
Clayton Smith at the 256th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
