The steal of the weekend belongs to the Bears and Walker: A-. Thirty-one other rooms let Devontez Walker slide, and the Bears were the ones holding the card at pick No. 225. Highway robbery. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will answer for taking defensive back early while interior defensive lineman and quarterback went begging.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The cost of the Yurosek reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Tyler Nubin and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 3rd pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Nubin
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 1 slot on Tyler Nubin with interior defensive lineman and quarterback unsolved.
Pick35
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
By-the-book stuff, Nate Wiggins at Round 2, Pick 3 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68
Rnd3
Princely Umanmielen
They took Princely Umanmielen at par in the 68th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick104
Rnd4
Graham Barton
A reasonable price with a little left over, Graham Barton in pick No. 104. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick108
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
Fair-plus on Danny Stutsman, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick132
Rnd4
Tory Horton
They will replay Tory Horton at slot 132 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick141
Rnd5
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in No. 141 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick145
Rnd5
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick182
Rnd6
Will Shipley
Will Shipley slipping to pick No. 182 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick225
Rnd7
Devontez Walker
You do not let a wide receiver like Devontez Walker reach Round 7, Pick 5 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick229
Rnd7
Benjamin Yurosek
Benjamin Yurosek in pick 229 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor need, but a need all the same.
