Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
D
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB+
The Steelers bled value on every deal, hence the D. Nobody else had Upton Stout anywhere near No. 155. The Steelers did, by 33 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That is an interior defensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In the 25th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value.
Pick30
Rnd1
Nic Scourton
In slot 30 they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
No edge and no loss on Alfred Collins in Round 2, Pick 20; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick89
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the 89th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick97
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at pick 97 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick116
Rnd4
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick123
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
The board fumbled Tez Johnson all the way to the 123rd pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick135
Rnd4
Tyler Baron
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyler Baron. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick139
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
They took Tyler Shough at par in the 139th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick149
Rnd5
Damien Martinez
No drama and no debate, Damien Martinez went about where he belonged in pick 149. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick150
Rnd5
Tommi Hill
A conviction pick on Tommi Hill at Round 5, Pick 12 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
Pick155
Rnd5
Upton Stout
They left a pile of value on the table to take Upton Stout this early at the Round 5 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Chase Lundt
Chase Lundt slid further than he should have, and slot 185 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick187
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
Fair-plus on Jack Kiser, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick223
Rnd7
Thomas Fidone II
Thomas Fidone II at slot 223 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick234
Rnd7
Bilhal Kone
Bilhal Kone in Round 7, Pick 18 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
