Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Cowboys cashed the board's mistake on Higgins: B+. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Cowboys came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
Landing Higgins that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Jackson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In pick 20 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in slot 45 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick51
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They paid a round early for Donovan Jackson in the 51st pick, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
Jaylin Noel in Round 3, Pick 12 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick85
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
A clean, defensible pick in No. 85 with a little surplus value in Ozzy Trapilo. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick119
Rnd4
Kyle Williams
The board had cheaper options than Kyle Williams at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick149
Rnd5
Tyler Baron
Tyler Baron at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick151
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
By-the-book stuff, Bhayshul Tuten at the 151st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick174
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton in pick No. 174 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193
Rnd6
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius slid further than he should have, and pick 193 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick204
Rnd6
Woody Marks
Woody Marks is a better player than Round 6, Pick 28 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick208
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
Fair-plus on KeAndre Lambert-Smith, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211
Rnd6
Caleb Rogers
A reasonable price with a little left over, Caleb Rogers in slot 211. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick217
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
They did well to land Luke Lachey in the 217th pick, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jay Higgins
Taking Jay Higgins in pick No. 232 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick239
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
Value with a capital V on Phil Mafah in the 239th overall pick, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jermari Harris at pick 247 is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
