Quarterback settled, Simpson in the fold, and a F for the Cowboys. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Princewill Umanmielen a full 51 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It bottoms out at a F.
Whatever Ty Simpson becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Ty Simpson
In the 3rd pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Pick14
Rnd1
T.J. Parker
In the 14th overall pick they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick24
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese slipping to pick No. 24 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kayden McDonald. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick46
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A premium they did not need to pay, Dillon Thieneman a notch or two before his time. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick114
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis in slot 114 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick130
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Chase Bisontis at slot 130 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick154
Rnd5
Quintrevion Wisner
Quintrevion Wisner at pick 154 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Pick176
Rnd5
CJ Daniels
Nothing to complain about; CJ Daniels went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick209
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
A big swing on Princewill Umanmielen at pick No. 209, well ahead of any board in the building. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick219
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the 219th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247
Rnd7
Diego Pavia
A tidy little value on Diego Pavia in the 247th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
