Draft Grade — Cowboys

McCarthy is the Cowboys' new face under center. Grade: D. The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Cowboys indulged a want in Solomon while a need in tight end and interior defensive lineman stayed open.
Getting Dixon where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Every board in the league had McCarthy lower, and that gap is the story.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 10th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback, even if it was a touch early.
Pick24
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick No. 24 they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
They paid up for Chris Braswell at Round 2, Pick 2 when waiting would have done the job. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick56
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in No. 56 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall at slot 72 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick87
Rnd3
Trey Benson
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Benson. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick106
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
A want over a need in pick 106: Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE while tight end and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick174
Rnd5
Dillon Johnson
A tidy little value on Dillon Johnson in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick233
Rnd7
Johnny Dixon
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Johnny Dixon in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
