The Cowboys won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B-. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Cowboys shredded theirs for Roman Hemby. He came off 131 spots early, and the room will hear about it. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it.
It is not that Kilgore is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
They did well to land Mansoor Delane in slot 12, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick22
Rnd1
Romello Height
In No. 22 they get juice off the edge, even if it was a touch early.
Pick53
Rnd2
Kamari Ramsey
Kamari Ramsey is a better player than pick 53 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick87
Rnd3
Harold Perkins Jr.
They went early on Harold Perkins Jr. in the 87th pick, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick111
Rnd4
J.C. Davis
They talked themselves into J.C. Davis at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 12 on Jalon Kilgore with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick151
Rnd5
Roman Hemby
Roman Hemby at the 151st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Pick178
Rnd5
Princewill Umanmielen
Princewill Umanmielen at pick 178 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick215
Rnd6
Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney at the 215th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick221
Rnd7
Da'Shawn Womack
They left a pile of value on the table to take Da'Shawn Womack this early at slot 221. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick225
Rnd7
Tristan Leigh
A tidy little value on Tristan Leigh in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
