Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Cowboys: B.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Maurice Smith at the 212th pick is 24 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. Getting DeJean where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
In the 25th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick56 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick87 Rnd3 Junior Colson
Junior Colson at slot 87 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick88 Rnd3 Audric Estime
A reach for Audric Estime in Round 3, Pick 25; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick124 Rnd4 James Williams
James Williams at pick 124 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick174 Rnd5 Christian Jones
Christian Jones in pick No. 174 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick203 Rnd6 Myles Jones
They took Myles Jones at par in pick 203, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick212 Rnd6 Maurice Smith
Maurice Smith in pick No. 212 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick245 Rnd7 Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry at the Round 7 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
