Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Commanders drew a line under the quarterback search with Williams: D+.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Commanders took Matthew Jones at pick 222, roughly 44 spots before his name belonged. Put together, it is a D+.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Landing James that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
Caleb Williams at pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick27 Rnd1 JC Latham
In slot 27 they get a blindside protector, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Jordan Morgan
They took Jordan Morgan at par in the 34th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick36 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick40 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin at Round 2, Pick 8 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67 Rnd3 Kiran Amegadjie
By-the-book stuff, Kiran Amegadjie at the 67th pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick78 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 78th overall pick is the proof. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick100 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
A big swing on Johnny Wilson at the 100th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick103 Rnd4 Bucky Irving
Value with a capital V on Bucky Irving in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick104 Rnd4 DJ James
The board fumbled DJ James all the way to No. 104, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick139 Rnd5 James Williams
Nice patience on James Williams, who had no business lasting to pick No. 139. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick152 Rnd5 Xavier Thomas
They jumped the gun on Xavier Thomas, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick162 Rnd5 Braiden McGregor
Braiden McGregor at pick 162 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick193 Rnd6 Trevor Keegan
They robbed the room for Trevor Keegan here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick222 Rnd7 Matthew Jones
This one needs a full-page explanation: Matthew Jones in the 222nd overall pick, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
