Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Bengals and McClellan: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Jase McClellan had no business being available in the Round 6 slot, and the Bengals did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Reaching for Thomas left real value on the table behind him.

Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
In pick 18 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick49 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Guyton at the 49th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick80 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at pick No. 80 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick115 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg in the 115th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick151 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ben Sinnott. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick173 Rnd5 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A reach for Zion Tupuola-Fetui in slot 173; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick196 Rnd6 Xavier Thomas
A conviction pick on Xavier Thomas at No. 196 that the board grades a round light. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick217 Rnd6 Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan at Round 6, Pick 42 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
