The Commanders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. Nobody had Joe Milton III this high, and it is not close. The Commanders reached 48 spots to get him at the 152nd pick. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Benson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Eichenberg pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman still on the board.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In No. 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick23
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In pick No. 23 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy at the 36th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick40
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in pick 40, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick67
Rnd3
Edgerrin Cooper
You do not let a linebacker like Edgerrin Cooper reach the 67th pick and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick78
Rnd3
Cade Stover
Good price on Cade Stover in Round 3, Pick 14, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick100
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in pick 100 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick108
Rnd4
Trey Benson
Trey Benson in pick No. 108 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick129
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 29 on Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick139
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Chau Smith-Wade at the 139th pick is the proof. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick152
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
They talked themselves into Joe Milton III at the 152nd overall pick, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick222
Rnd7
Josh Proctor
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Josh Proctor. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
