Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Castro: B+.

The rest of the league will want that one back. Sebastian Castro tumbling to the 49ers in pick No. 138 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.

If Simpkins III pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 15 they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17 Rnd1 Jahdae Barron
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
Pick43 Rnd2 Kenneth Grant
Circle this one: Kenneth Grant at the 43rd pick is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick46 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
The board fumbled Jalon Walker all the way to slot 46, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick49 Rnd2 Marcus Mbow
Marcus Mbow at No. 49 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick58 Rnd2 Wyatt Milum
No drama and no debate, Wyatt Milum went about where he belonged in pick 58. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75 Rnd3 Jaylin Noel
Jaylin Noel is a better player than the 75th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips in pick No. 100 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Value said wait; Jake Majors in the 113th overall pick says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138 Rnd4 Sebastian Castro
Taking Sebastian Castro in Round 4, Pick 36 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick147 Rnd5 Willie Lampkin
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Willie Lampkin well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick227 Rnd7 Torricelli Simpkins III
They talked themselves into Torricelli Simpkins III at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick249 Rnd7 Jackson Hawes
They paid a round early for Jackson Hawes in No. 249, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick252 Rnd7 Ethan Downs
A big swing on Ethan Downs at slot 252, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
